Arnon Z. Shorr
 |
There are some things that Arnon Shorr does which are irrelevant to his productions. He builds sand castles, juggles, plays lots of different musical instruments very poorly, and swing-dances. He reserves the occasional long walk on the beach for his wife, who, amazingly, encourages his filmmaking ambitions. Arnon first developed an interest in films when he was ten years old, and when nobody offered to teach him how to make movies, he did it himself, becoming 'that kid with the video camera' in high school. As a college student at Brandeis University, when no one would offer to screen his films, Arnon created his own screenings, which eventually transformed in to The SunDeis Student Film Festival. Arnon graduated from Brandeis with a major in Film Studies (which the university does not offer). When no one would give Arnon a film job, he founded OxRock Productions, through which he produces and directs fiction and non-fiction shorts and features. Arnon taught film and media stuff at his former high school (now called Gann Academy), and at Newbury College. Arnon enjoys watching films and writing about them at Musing Pictures, a blog he created when no one would publish his writing. He is still making movies.http://www.oxrockproductions.com/

“Widow’s Meal” was
made at the end of 2007 for the Jewish Film Challenge, a nationwide six-day
filmmaking contest devised by students and administrators at the University of
Madison Hillel. Contestants received an email on Saturday night with three
elements that had to be incorporated in to a short film. They then had to
spend six days creating and completing that film, putting a DVD in the mail
before Shabbat on Friday afternoon. The three elements that were
incorporated in to “Widow’s Meal” were: 1) candle lighting, 2) tzedakah (in any
form), and 3) the line of dialogue “is that a Jewish last name?” “Widow’s
Meal” was one of three contest finalists, and in February 2008, after all three
short films enjoyed a public screening in Madison, Wisconsin, “Widow’s Meal” was
announced as the contest’s first-place winner. The film has since made
appearances at several festivals around the country, and is currently available
online.

"Arnon always presents a clear vision for what he wants to see on film, and confidently orchestrates cast and crew in the execution of that vision.” --Tom Bennett, Director of Photography, Stepping Stone Entertainment. |
